The Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) honored the courage and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers who fought in the historic battles of Bataan and Corregidor during World War II, in a solemn tribute for Araw ng Kagitingan on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

In its official message, EastMinCom underscored the lasting legacy of these fallen heroes, stressing that their sacrifices continue to inspire the ongoing defense of the country’s sovereignty. The command described the soldiers’ “steadfast spirit and selfless sacrifices” as a “powerful beacon” that fuels the nation’s unwavering commitment to protect the homeland.

EastMinCom also called on Filipinos to remain united in preserving the spirit of patriotism: “As we honor their memory, let us stay united in keeping the flame of patriotism alive—drawing strength from their valor as we continue to uphold the freedom they so bravely fought for.”

At the same time, the 10th Infantry Division (10ID) of the Philippine Army also marked the Day of Valor, paying tribute to the bravery of those who defended Bataan and Corregidor.

The 10th Infantry “Agila” Division of the Philippine Army paid tribute to the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices of Filipino soldiers in their continuous pursuit of peace and national development. The division concluded their message with a patriotic salute: “Maligayang Araw ng Kagitingan! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”

In Davao City, Vice Mayor Melchor Quitain led the 83rd Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration held at the Veteran’s Memorial Monument. In his speech, Quitain honored the courage of Filipino soldiers during World War II and encouraged the public to reflect on their legacy with renewed patriotism.

“Let us remember the sacrifices of our heroes, many of whom endured unimaginable hardships—not for personal gain, but to secure the freedom and peace we enjoy today,” he stated.

Quitain also urged Filipinos to draw strength from the defenders of 1942, remain vigilant, and work hand in hand to build a strong and united nation.

Former police official Isidro S. Lapeña also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of confronting modern-day battles such as corruption and disinformation. He voiced concern over the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, urging that it should not overshadow the former leader’s contributions—particularly his aggressive campaign against illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte led separate ceremonies honoring the fallen members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“We must honor their memory by building a nation that will never again suffer the same pain and hardship,” the Vice President said in her message.

Just days after the Philippines grieved the passing of the legendary singer Pilita Corrales, the nation has again been struck by sorrow with the loss of another cultural icon—National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Nora Aunor.

On April 16, 2025, the country was shaken by the news that Nora Aunor, fondly known as the “Superstar,” had passed away at the age of 71 during a heart procedure. Her death followed closely on the heels of Pilita Corrales’ own passing, marking a heartbreaking period for the Filipino arts and entertainment community.

Nora Aunor’s life and career were defined by extraordinary talent, resilience, and an unwavering connection with the masses. From her humble beginnings in Iriga City to becoming a household name, she captured hearts through music, and later, with her unforgettable performances in films such as Himala, The Flor Contemplacion Story, and Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos. Her portrayals often mirrored the struggles of the Filipino people, earning her not only critical acclaim but deep respect and affection from generations of fans.

Her death, coming so soon after the loss of Pilita Corrales—another towering figure in Philippine entertainment—feels like the closing of a remarkable era. Both women, in their own right, shaped the landscape of Filipino music and film. Pilita was hailed as “Asia’s Queen of Songs,” while Nora was revered as the ultimate dramatic actress and performer of her time.
