The current development of a new 9.488-hectare Sanitary Landfill in Barangay San Antonio, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte is poised to revolutionize waste management practices in the municipality. With a budget of Php40 million, this ambitious project encompasses the construction of a Category 1 Municipal Sanitary Landfill, along with essential facilities required for its operation.

Key infrastructure components include the MENRO office, Waste Sorting Station, Waste Processing Station, Weighbridge Station, Motorpool/Equipment Area, Special Vaults, and a Water Treatment Facility comprising various ponds such as the Leachate Pond, Sedimentation Pond, Trickling Filter, Reedbed Pond, and Monitoring Pond. This facility is believed to be the first of its kind in the entire Zamboanga del Norte.

Designed to accommodate almost 55,000 m3 of residual waste over the next 10-20 years, the landfill forms an integral part of the municipality’s Solid Waste Management Program. Notably, it features water treatment facility equipped to handle leachate both physically and biologically. Utilizing High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners, the facility prevents leachate seepage, ensuring environmental protection.

The water treatment process involves multiple stages, beginning with a leachate lagoon and sedimentation pond for physical treatment. Additionally, a mini-trickling filter and reedbed pond offer biological treatment, culminating in a monitoring pond for quality assurance. Once the water meets DENR guidelines, it will be discharged into the surrounding area.

Scheduled for completion in 2025, this innovative landfill promises to address pressing waste management challenges while prioritizing sustainability. Moreover, it represents a significant step towards achieving environmental stewardship and community well-being.

Upon completion, operational alternative technologies and equipment, including Bioreactor Composting technology, Plastic Densifier, Glass pulverizer, and CHB making machine, will be relocated from the Ecological Park to the new landfill site. This strategic transition ensures the seamless integration of advanced waste management solutions into the municipality’s infrastructure.

With its commitment to environmental sustainability and effective waste management, the municipality is poised to set a benchmark for responsible urban development. The 9.4-hectare Sanitary Landfill Project stands as a testament to the municipality’s dedication to building a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.
