DIPOLOG CITY, Sept. 7 (PIA) – Students showcased innovation as the Department of Science and Technology officially launched this year’s Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) in Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte. The event aimed to highlight the contributions of science, technology, and innovations (STI) to nation-building and resilience.

Under the theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa matatag, maginhawa at panatag na kinabukasan,” the RSTW aimed to encourage youth to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career paths by showcasing technological innovations with real-world applications.

The DOST invited schools like the Philippine Science High School – Zamboanga Peninsula Region Campus (PSHS-ZRC) and Ateneo de Zamboanga University, as well as local schools in Dipolog City, such as Dipolog Medical Center, Saint Vincent’s College, and Zamboanga del Norte National High School, to showcase their technologies.

At the PSHS-ZRC’s booth, students had the opportunity to engage with robotics, while the DOST’s Science Journo provided a hands-on experience in photojournalism.

National Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., along with DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Dr. Sancho Mabborang, Regional Director Martin Wee, and Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Director Nuhman Aljani, attended the event. Provincial Governor Rosalina G. Jalosjos and Dipolog City Mayor Darel Dexter T. Uy also expressed their support.

Sec. Solidum emphasized the sincerity of DOST’s mission to bring STI closer to the people. He cited the Grassroots Innovations for Inclusive Development Program, launched through a SalikLakbay expedition in Diwan, Dipolog City, as an example. The program identified local innovations and implemented interventions to support the livelihood of locals.

Dipolog City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Liza R. Tabilon CESO V commended the initiative, stating that practical exposures help students understand how their interest in science and technology can lead to fulfilling careers. She emphasized the strategy’s role in nurturing well-rounded, forward-thinking individuals who contribute to local and national development.

Vea Alessandra G. Concha, a Grade 10 STEM student from Zamboanga del Norte National High School, expressed the impact of RSTW, particularly for elementary students unsure about their future tracks. She hoped that the exhibits would inspire them to appreciate and learn more about STEM fields.

Next year’s RSTW celebration will be held in another province within the Zamboanga Peninsula, following a round-robin basis for the event. (RVC/PJF/PIA9-Zamboanga del Norte)
